STEM IN MAUI

AFRL offers many opportunities in STEM – from elementary school programs to college scholarships, internships and careers.

We know that inspiring and engaging the next generation of scientists and engineers is critical to the mission of AFRL, Space Force and our Nation.

Our mission is to inspire, cultivate, and develop exceptional STEM talent by exposing K-12 students and teachers to U.S. Air Force and U.S. Space Force opportunities and resources. We are dedicated to preparing the workforce of the future. We want to connect with and impact K-12 students and educators all over the world because we understand that what happens tomorrow depends on what we do today to attract, engage, and inspire the next generation of Airmen and Guardians, both military and civilian. Here, the sky is not the limit – it’s a starting point.

PROGRAMS IN MAUI

> SCHOOL AND COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES
  • Visiting Planetarium: We provide an opportunity to view the night sky and learn about the constellations and planets in our solar system.
  • Career Day: Invite our military and civilian members to share with your group career opportunities here on Maui and around the nation. Hear about how they got to where they are and their amazing journeys and experiences!
    • Scientists and engineers work across a wide range of STEM career pathways in the Department of Defense. Alongside military Airmen and Guardians, there are people who work for the Department of the Air Force that do not serve in the military. They are called “civilians” (also known as nonmilitary government employees). Many serve in their roles as innovators and problem-solvers of real-world challenges. STEM jobs in defense offer a diverse and amazing opportunity to make a difference and work with the latest research, technology, and engineering in high-demand areas.
  • Summit Tour: We provide 2-4 tours a year to school/community groups to share the science we are doing at the top of Haleakala! Check out the 3.6m telescope and view the entire complex.
    • Please reach out to us to schedule your school or community group.
  • Star Party: We collaborate with Amateur Astronomers and the UH Institute for Astronomy to share our personal telescope to check out the night sky.
    • Please reach out to us to schedule your school or community group.
> LENDING LIBRARY
  • STEM Kits and More: We can connect you with our free STEMWorks lending library and Civil Air Patrol that provide STEM activities for every age level.
> FIRST LEGO COMPETITIONS
  • PreK-8: FIRST LEGO League introduces science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to children through fun, exciting hands-on learning. Participants gain real-world problem-solving experiences through a guided, global robotics program, helping today’s students and teachers build a better future together.
    • They inspire youth to experiment and grow their critical thinking, coding, and design skills through hands-on STEM learning and robotics.
  • Grade 7-12: FIRST Tech Challenge students learn to think like engineers. Teams design, build, and code robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. Robots are built from a reusable platform, powered by Android technology, and can be coded using a variety of levels of Java-based programming.
