PROGRAMS IN NEW MEXICO

STEMYS | Excellence in STEM Awards

Students, teachers and other New Mexicans doing remarkable things in science, technology, engineering and math education are honored each year. In 2021, AFRL’s Tech Engagement Office in New Mexico presented the 3rd annual Excellence in STEM Awards, aka The STEMYS.

SUPER STEM SATURDAY

New Mexico’s largest annual STEM celebration was reimagined in 2021. A family-friendly scavenger hunt that will sent teams across Albuquerque and online to complete clue based challenges related to STEM in our community and the history of science, technology, engineering and math in New Mexico.

The scavenger hunt included a variety of activities to complete challenges, including finding and checking in at specific locations, taking photos of the correct answer, and answering questions about something they watched online. While the location clues are mostly based in Albuquerque, online challenges allowed for teams in other parts of the state to participate and be eligible for prizes.

STEM SIGNING DAY

STEM Signing Day celebrates New Mexico high school seniors who are going on to pursue a higher education degree in a science, technology, engineering or math field. Fashioned after athletic signing days, students sign “letters of intent” to their chosen STEM field and school.

AFRL hosted a virtual STEM Signing Day celebration and letter signing on May 4, 2021.

AFRL STEM ACADEMY

AFRL’s STEM Academy in New Mexico (formerly AFRL La Luz Academy) is a science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education outreach program sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory at Kirtland Air Force Base. We offer hands-on, minds-on STEM activities that engage students in the application of STEM content in context and introduce connections to STEM careers at Kirtland Air Force Base.
