Bio: Col. Bernt Balchen was a Norwegian aviator and a pioneer of the Artic. He joined the USAAF at Gen. Hap Arnold’s request in 1941 and was given the mission to supervise the construction, and eventually command operations at the “Bluie West 8” U.S. air base in Greenland.
