AFRL Sensors Directorate launches series of virtual courses

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio – The Air Force Research Laboratory Sensors Directorate Learning Office recently launched a quarterly “Lunch and Learn” series of virtual courses to provide military, civilian and contractor employees the opportunity to further their professional development.

The first course, “Balancing Work, Family and Life” focused on identifying and dealing with stress.

“When you work in a learning organization you are constantly taking classes, courses, and training to keep your certifications current as an engineer, scientist, researcher, mathematician, etc.,” said Simone Koram, Sensors Directorate Learning Officer. “I think to maintain balance, we cannot overlook learning the soft skills.”

The learning office teamed up with Military Family Life Counselors from the Airman & Family Readiness Center to provide the classes.

“We want to enhance and support the work force at AFRL through topics that are beneficial and inspire growth,” said Ami Olinger, a Military Family Life Counselor with the Airman & Family Readiness Center at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.

Reducing the stress of AFRL employees is vital, especially during these uncertain times.

“Learning does not stop just because we’re also dealing with a pandemic,” said Koram. “We still need to be innovative and creative in delivering learning opportunities. It’s amazing what we can accomplish when we take the time to find innovative approaches to stay connected with the workforce.”
